The Stoughton Press - Holiday / Winter 2010 Edition www.stoughtonpress.com
The Stoughton Area Key Club came into existence in the fall of 2007 when 31 members agreed to unite and form the Charter Club. We starting with the project of cleaning the school grounds following football games and the cross-country invitational, which led to raking yards for the elderly and handicapped folks in town. One project led to another and over the past 3 years, the club has performed over 2000 service hours while helping the community and schools with over 28 different projects.
Many are repeated year after year. The Stoughton Senior Center jumped in to assist the group by forming a coalition called the “Friends of the Key Club“. This partnership created many new opportunities for the group to show how much they enjoy helping the elderly in Stoughton. Yards are cleaned, snow shoveled, windows are washed, groceries delivered, and rooms are dusted. Through all of this, lasting friendships have been formed that otherwise, never would have happened.
During the years, the club decided that some fun should be added to our service project calendar. A board game night was created with the friendly competition going well into the evening. A disc golf tournament was organized so all could learn the skill and test their talents. We started helping the Kiwanis Club with Santa’s Workshop and the spring Easter Egg Hunt. Members began attending the District Convention in Green Bay. With this experience, we realized that Key Club stuff could be a blast!
The project of delivering The Stoughton Press to every doorstep in Stoughton was presented to the club this fall and with the help of the Kiwanis and The Stoughton Holiday Fund, we are excited to accept this challenge. The membership has grown to over 90 members over the past three years, which enables us to perform such a daunting task.
It is satisfying to know our efforts will help Stoughton businesses. The Club would like to thank Jerry and Linda Schalk, the publishers of The Stoughton Press, for this opportunity to earn enough money to send more of our members to D-Con (our convention) next spring, where the theme will be, “Super Heroes”! The fun is about to begin!
